BANA Board Meets Again
In Special Emergency Session
Briarwood
Area Neighborhood
Association, Inc
After failing to secure a quorum at the April 21st meeting, Jeff Whitby called a special emergency meeting of the board for 6:00 PM, Tuesday, April 28, 2009. At this meeting, nine voting members attended and thus there was a quorum.

In attendance were: Director Jim Bell, Secretary Elaine Braddock, Guests Chris & Kelly Bulloch, Capitol View-Stifft’s Station Alert Center Facilitator Kathleen Countryman, Listserv Manager Betty Danley, President-Elect Michele Easter, Director Maxine Ellington, Director Tom Gorzalski, Treasurer Hall Reynolds, Directors Chance & Cara Tharp and President Jeff Whitby.

A Nominating Committee was appointed to propose nominations at BANA’s fall business meeting on September 12th for officers and directors whose terms expire this year. The committee consists of Jeff Whitby, Tom Gorzalski and Cara Tharp.

Directors with expiring terms are Jay Atkins, Jim Bell, Elaine Braddock and James Thomson. Officer terms are one year and director terms are three years. Note: BANA residents must have paid current dues to be nominated. BANA bylaws are here.

If interested in serving as an officer or director, contact a member of the Nominating Committee. Phone numbers and email addresses of Nominating Committee members are on the webpage at: http://www.briarwoodlr.org/page5.html.

Plans for May 16th
Spring Block Party

BANA’s Spring Block Party is scheduled for 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Saturday, May 16, 2009. The Block Party Committee consists of Rex Easter and Jeff Whitby. Paper plates, hot dogs, bottled water and condiments will be furnished to all who attend.

Hopes are that the block party can be held on the island in Sandpiper Circle, where last year’s event took place. Whitby said he would check with Sandpiper residents for permission. When firm, the location will on the BANA Event Calendar, posted to the BANA listserv and on signs put up in BANA neighborhoods.

Bring lawn chairs and a dessert or a side dish to share.

BANA to Apply for
A Challenge Grant

For the first time in years, the Briarwood Area Neighborhood Association, Inc. will apply for a Challenge Grant. This is a monetary grant from the city to be matched in kind by volunteer hours. The Briarwood signs at Markham and Sun Valley and at Hughes and Sandpiper, as well as the trees planted along Interstate-630 were largely paid for by past Challenge Grants.

As voted by the board, the application filed this year will be for the maximum amount - $1,500:
$1,000 for Neighborhood Watch Funding
                (wireless video camera, fliers)
$500 for Tutoring supplies for Brady School

The amount received will depend on the demand for grants from other neighborhood associations.
Future Plans

Plans to apply for sidewalk grants have been dropped for this year as there is no money in the program.

BANA’s next Board of Directors Meeting will be at 1:00 PM, Sunday, August 16, 2009 at a location to be announced.

BANA’s Fall Business Meeting will be 9:00 AM, Saturday, September 12, 2009, at the Christ Lutheran Church.
