A Look From the Outside
Here's a picture, taken from across Markham, of the BANA Plant Exchange. After a month of cold weather and rain, the event, originally scheduled for Saturday, March 31st, and rescheduled twice, finally took place, starting at 10:00 AM. This year, it was sunny and 70 degrees - almost twenty degrees warmer than our second annual plant exchange in March, 2006.
Special thanks go to Briarwood resident Stan McDaniel of Healthy Lawns & Shrubs at 7225 West 12th Street who donated azaleas and nandinas for the auction. Also, special thanks go to BANA residents John and Mary Lou Wright of the Coffee Beanery in Park Plaza Mall, who donated the delicious coffees that folks enjoyed along with goodies that other BANA residents contributed.

Here's the Deal
Each spring, the Briarwood Elementary School at 7915 West Markham, one of the schools in the Briarwood area, allows the Briarwood Area Neighborhood Association to use the school parking lot for an annual plant exchange. In return, the association donates half of the event's profits to the school.
In addition, this year, BANA Director Nell Matthew Mock, in collaboration with a UAMS effort, collected articles for personal hygiene, such as toothbrushes, for distribution to needy Brady students.
The annual plant exchange is one example of the Briarwood association working with local institutions to produce a better neighborhood

Auctioning the Plants
To the left, BANA president, Jay Atkins, standing with a microphone in hand beside a trailerload of plants, is auctioning them, one by one.
On the right, following the completion of an auction, the buyer is being awarded his plant to take home and put in his yard.

Collecting for Plants Sold
Seated in the shade of the covered parking lot portal, with cash box and receipt book at hand, BANA treasurer, Betty Danley, is kept busy collecting for the plants sold.
Proceeds from this BANA plant exchange this year, totaled $289.31 --- better than $100.00 more than we did last year. Half of the money will be donated to the Brady Elementary School.
It was a great time, enjoying free coffee and donuts and getting to see neighbors after the winter hibernation. One sad note was that seven trees in front of the school had died, unable to survive last summer's drought or perhaps the cold snaps this spring.
